Two Leeds women have been chosen out of hundreds of people across the North East as regional finalists for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
Vanya Thompson, 22, and Emma Jones, 36, are both in with a chance of winning £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas if crowned the ultimate winner, as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 20th annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.
Glasses wearers have been showing off their specs style by sharing their selfies online and entering in stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Both ladies were invited to visit their local Specsavers stores in Leeds City Centre and at Kirkstall Morrison’s, to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.
Call centre worker Vanya was bullied at school for wearing glasses and says: ‘The reason I entered the competition was because I saw it’s in aid of an anti-bulling charity. I got all my friends to enter as well, to raise as much as possible for the charity and help put a positive picture out there for glasses. For anyone who’s struggling to get to grips with her glasses, don’t give up on finding a pair that makes you feel fabulous!’
Emma comments: ‘I’ve only been wearing glasses for two years and I’m really enjoying them. I was pleased when I found out I needed them because they’re such a great accessory and can change a whole outfit. I’m going to be a bit braver with my next pair and experiment with some colour.’
A word from the director
Louise Hardy, retail director at Specsavers in Leeds, comments: ‘Vanya looks fantastic in her glasses and is doing a brilliant job of championing the cause among young people. That’s what Spectacle Wearer of the Year is all about and we’ve got our fingers crossed for Vanya in the next stage of the competition!’
Emma Bunton launched the awards
The awards were launched by Spice Girls singer and Heart FM DJ Emma Bunton earlier this year. If Vanya or Emma triumph in their respective age categories, they could meet her at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 6 October.
The ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of Atlantis Paradise Island and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
