As the nation marks Dementia Awareness Week, the team at Specsavers Islington is becoming qualified to better understand customers suffering from dementia and their needs.

An initiative run by Alzheimer's Society

Specsavers employees nationwide are completing Dementia Friends training, an initiative run by the Alzheimer’s Society. In the process they are becoming recognised as Dementia Friends, with a badge to wear on their uniforms to indicate their increased level of dementia awareness to customers.

Bansi Dhamecha, store director of Specsavers in Islington says: ‘We are all aware that dementia affects our elderly generation, particularly with their memory, but what is less known is how it may affect a person in other aspects of their life.

Little bit of extra time with a patient

'I have members of family that are affected, as do a few other members of our team.

'Living with dementia is difficult for the person as well as those around them. So we know as a store that just taking that little bit of extra time with our patients that require our help and support will make a big difference'.
