Ipswich has found a star in local woman, Yvonne Harrigan, as she has been announced as a finalist in Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.
Star-studded award ceremony
Specsavers Ipswich customer Yvonne, 53, was chosen out thousands of entrants across the UK and Ireland who submitted a bespectacled selfie to the annual competition, celebrating those who wear glasses across a broad age range.
Following the announcement, Yvonne will travel to London to attend the star-studded award ceremony on 10 October, where she will collect her award from actor and musician Martin Kemp, who will be presenting the award for the 45-59 age category on the night.
She will then have the opportunity to be crowned the overall winner, who will be awarded £10,000 along with £1,000 worth of glasses.
Yvonne, a theatre assistant at Ipswich Hospital, has proven that her style is timeless after she was shortlisted as a regional finalist for the second year in a row.
Unfortunately, she was unable reach the grand finals last year but now has gone above and beyond, reaching the national final of the 2017 Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
A glasses wearer for over 30 years, Yvonne is an avid fan of specs both for practical and style reasons. She says: ‘I’ve always been interested in having a nice pair of glasses that suited my face and I’ve always liked big glasses. I started small and, as I’ve got older, they’ve just got bigger and bigger.
‘If I had one piece of advice for other glasses wearers it would be not to be scared to go bold. I never imagined reaching this point and I can’t wait to take part in the star-studded night that raises funds for Kidscape, which is such a great cause.’
A word from Ipswich Specsavers
Store directors Ming Tye and Mark Taggart congratulated Yvonne saying: ‘We’ve never had a SWOTY winner in store so to have Yvonne become a regional finalist and now get through to the national finals this year is amazing.
‘Yvonne has such a unique style and really highlights the way that one accessory can reflect your personality perfectly. It’s lovely to hear her story and it’s so nice to be able to put our customers in the limelight as they all wear their frames with pride.
‘Our number one priority will always be eye health and care but it’s so nice to be able to give a range of choice and style that makes wearing glasses no longer a chore, but instead a chance to look after your eyes with style. We wish her the best of luck and can’t wait to see her in the final.’
