Specsavers employee Elissa Tunks has recently qualified to become Hounslow's newest Optometrist, here she tells us about the hard work involved and what she loves about working at Specsavers.
How did you start working for Specsavers?
I started by doing work experience at Specsavers at the age of 17, this is when I first became interested in optometry. From there I was offered a job at the Specsavers Hounslow store as an optical assistant and worked there while studying at university and I am still here today.
Was it hard studying and working at the same time?
During pre-reg it was difficult studying and working time as the days are very long. However, you find the motivation to do it because you know how important that final year is. It also helps that you learn so much during your day in the store.
Where your colleagues supportive?
Extremely supportive, we have the previous pre-regs in the store, so it was good to get first-hand knowledge and advice from them because they have been through the same process. The senior staff are all very helpful.
Did you expect to pass your exams the first time?
I didn't expect to pass my exams the first time just because each stage was very different. I was very fortunate that I had a lot of training and the store made me as prepared as I could be.
How would you like your career to progress now?
I am excited just to continue gaining my confidence as a qualified optometrist. In the future, I would like to continue further my education and doing courses to specialise in different things.
