An optometrist at Specsavers Hounslow invited budding artists to take part in a pop-up painting class this month to help raise £160 for her upcoming charity mission to Africa.
Priya Raju held a two-hour painting masterclass for fellow colleagues at the opticians on 13 April, which gave staff the chance to improve their artistic abilities and learn new skills while also being treated to popcorn and prosecco.
Stroke of genius
Priya, who is a keen artist in her spare time, hosted the event as part of a fundraising drive for Vision Aid Overseas, a charity that provides eye care support and services to people living in remote communities in Africa.
The money will be used to support volunteer work Priya will undertake with Vision Aid Overseas, which will see her spend two weeks in Ghana training student optometrists at a university and provide eye tests to locals.
Priya says: ‘We had a great evening and I want to say a big thank you to the team for attending the class and donating to the cause. The money raised will go a long way to helping people who have little access to professional eye care, and I’m looking forward to supporting Vision Aid Overseas with my visit to Ghana later this year.’
Ranna Rai, store director at Specsavers Hounslow, says: ‘We’re incredibly proud of Priya for the charity work she is doing and we’re determined to support her in any way we can. Vision Aid Overseas is a really important charity to us as it helps to provide much needed optical services to many people living in challenging conditions.’
Priya is now planning a series of further events to raise additional funds for Vision Aid Overseas, and customers looking to support her efforts can donate through her JustGiving page found here.
