Specsavers Hounslow optometrist Neelam Sidhu has gone above and beyond to provide support to homeless people going through challenging times this winter.
Neelam teamed up with the Vision Care for Homeless People team and charity group Crisis to provide free sight tests and glasses for people sleeping rough over Christmas.
The activity saw more than 10,000 volunteers work at local centres to provide a warm and welcome atmosphere to guests all over the country, enabling them to enjoy the Christmas festivities together.
The volunteers provided services ranging from eyecare, dental care and healthcare to haircuts, manicures and sewing services, as well as meals throughout the day.
A helping hand
Neelam was in a team of three optometrists who performed eye tests and gave out glasses to guests, with the frames supplied by Specsavers and glazing and lenses provided by Essilor.
She said: ‘The guests were very appreciative and it was gratifying being able to use my passion for optics to help someone in need. A simple pair of glasses could help give the confidence to take the first step out of homelessness for someone.
‘This year, 312 sight tests were performed and a record number of dispenses. I will definitely be volunteering again this Christmas and I hope this story will encourage others too as well.’
