The Hoddesdon team are preparing for Recycle Week, which takes place from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 September, by encouraging their customers to bring in their old spectacles.
What does the team do with your spectacles?
Stores across the UK have recycling boxes on the shop floor, where customers are encouraged to bring in their old spectacles. The donated specs are recycled by an organisation called Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).
What is Vision Aid Overseas?
Vision Aid Overseas was founded in 1985 and has been helping some of the world’s poorest people to see clearly for over 30 years. VAO has been Specsavers international eye care charity since 2008 and since then Specsavers has raised more than half a million pounds. Money raised by selling the recycled materials will support the charity’s work providing eye care to people in deprived areas across Ghana, Zambia and Ethiopia.
A word from the store director
Store director Lee Jobson-Fowle said he wanted to share his thanks with the community for their ongoing support of Vision Aid Overseas.
‘It’s our loyal customers that make our support of VAO possible’, says Lee.
‘With Recycle Week coming up, we’d love to see our VAO box full to the brim of spectacles, so please remember if you have any lying around and pop in to see us!’
