A brand new store has opened its doors in Helensburgh following a £400,000 investment.

Specsavers has launched in the town, creating five jobs. The team is headed up by director duo Robin Mitchell and Michael Griffin.

Latest technology
The store features the latest high-tech equipment including 3D scanning technology, which allows optometrists to view the eye in more detail than ever before.

The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques.

OCT scans are available as part of an enhanced sight test and can be requested when the appointment is booked or when a customer arrives in store. The enhanced sight test will be free during the store’s first month and will be available for £20 thereafter.

Audiology service
The store also offers an audiology service with Specsavers’ audiologist Colin Vallance visiting the store every Tuesday to conduct hearing tests.

Store director, Michael Griffin, said: ‘We are delighted to open our fantastic new store and look forward to looking after the eyes and ears of Helensburgh’s locals.

‘We are holding an official launch on Saturday 7 September and look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to stop by the store to meet the team.’

Both Robin and Michael are experienced optometrists. Robin has been store director of the neighbouring Specsavers Dumbarton store for more than 15 years. Michael has risen through the ranks to become store director in Helensburgh after working as an optometrist in Clydebank.

Michael added: ‘I know the area well having spent time sailing around the west coast growing up and I’m looking forward to our store becoming part of the local community.

‘I’ll be based in Helensburgh full-time and Robin will work between here and his Dumbarton store.’
