A Harlow woman has become a regional finalist for the third time in Specsavers search for Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2017.
Sandra Hayes, a 62-year-old headmaster’s PA, is in the running to win Spectacle Wearer of the Year title and £10,000, and was awarded a £150 voucher for brand new glasses and a bottle of champagne at the Harlow store.
Having worn glasses for the past 30 years, Sandra has always liked them. She said: ‘I first entered the competition in 2015 when I saw it advertised in the Harlow Star and I thought it was a great idea, especially when I saw that they sponsor Kidscape, which is a really worthwhile charity. I thought if I entered then it would be another £1 for them and who knows, maybe I’d get a prize.
‘A fashion accessory as well as being functional’
‘I’ve got lots of pairs of glasses. These days you can get almost any frame in any colour and shape – there’s a great variety now. I look at my glasses in the morning and pick them depending on how I feel. They’re a fashion accessory as well as being functional.’
Store manager at Specsavers Harlow, Michael Rees, said: ‘Sandra is well known at the store. We’ve even got a picture of her in our staff room from when she was selected last year. I’m really happy she’s got to this stage again and I hope that this time she gets chosen to be the overall winner.’
Advice from Sandra
When asked if she has any advice for other people with specs, Sandra said: ‘Embrace wearing your glasses. Lots of people need to wear them and now there are so many different styles to choose from, go out and enjoy wearing yours.’
