Following National Glaucoma Awareness Week, Specsavers Halifax is reminding residents that the condition is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the UK.
Philip Garbe, store director at Halifax Specsavers says: ‘Glaucoma is a terrible condition to live with but thanks to vital research there are now treatments and solutions available. Early diagnosis is key, so we’re urging anyone who is regularly suffering from misty vision, intense pain or tender eyes to come and visit us in store.'
Around 500,000 people across England and Wales have glaucoma but many more could be losing their sight due to the condition without a diagnosis.
There is a known treatment for the disease, and 95 per cent of those who are diagnosed in the early stages of glaucoma maintain good sight throughout their lives.
However, regular eye examinations are absolutely vital to detect the disease early and prevent any loss of sight.
The thief of sight
Philip continues: ‘I can’t stress enough how important it is to have your eyes tested at least once every two years. Glaucoma is known as ‘the thief of sight’, because the condition can become quite advanced before you even notice any symptoms.
‘We particularly want to reach out to the over-40s, people with family history of glaucoma, people of Afro-Caribbean descent and those suffering from diabetes, poor circulation, migraines, short-sightedness or eye injuries, as these groups are at an increased risk of developing the disease.’
