Greenock Glenpark Harriers recently held a junior athletics championship to mark the Year of Young People thanks to support from its local Specsavers store.
Track and field event
Specsavers in Greenock’s £300 sponsorship of the event helped to cover the costs of hiring the track and the medals presented to the youngsters who took part.
The event took place on 17 June at Ravenscraig Stadium and included a variety of events including from 100m to 1,500m races.
This was the first time Greenock Glenpark Harriers organised a track and field event exclusively for its juniors with 44 youngsters taking part.
Stephen McLoone, secretary at Greenock Glenpark Harriers, said: ‘Our track and field championship was a superb day. Not only did our junior athletes participate - many of them helped to plan and organise the event too. They were involved in everything from devising the timetable of events to promoting it and they did a fantastic job.
‘We’d like to thank Specsavers for its support in helping to deliver the event.’
Supporting local sport
Jonathan Dry, store director at Specsavers in Greenock, said: ‘We were delighted to support such a great local event.
‘It was fantastic to see so many young athletes take part and we loved that they played a huge role in organising the event. They will have had the chance to develop key skills vital for the workplace.
