Three members of the team at Specsavers in Grays are qualified Dementia Friends.

A Dementia Friend, which is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, helps staff to develop an understanding of dementia and support customers and employees who are affected by the condition.

Important to help

The team members, who have taken the qualification, include: Paula Davey, store trainer, as well as both directors of the Grays opticians, Kiranjeet Kaur and Niki Kaur.

Niki Kaur, store director at Specsavers in Grays, said: ‘It’s important to help customers who suffer from dementia and make them feel at ease while in the store.

‘Becoming a Dementia Friend means staff have a greater understanding of ways in which to help those who suffer with the condition. ‘It’s about taking that little extra time to support and care for customers.’

More qualifications to come

Niki added: ‘We’re aiming for the whole team qualified in the next few weeks.’ Dementia Friends is a qualification that is completed online and entails watching a series of scenario-based videos.
