The team at Specsavers in Goole are raising funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society to mark National Dementia Week. Over the next two weeks, customers and members of the Goole community are invited to take part in a balloon race for £1 a go, starting at Specsavers on Boothferry Road. Each balloon is attached to a ticket so that its ‘owner’ can be identified after setting it free.
Designer sunglasses up for grabs
The person whose balloon travels the furthest and has its ticket returned to Specsavers will win a pair of designer sunglasses. On Friday 1 May and Friday 8 May the team in store will also ditch their everyday uniforms and wear denim to show their support for Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Denim Against Dementia’ campaign.

Rob Winlow, store director of Specsavers in Goole, commented: ‘All of us will have a friend or family member who is affected by dementia at some point in our lives, and it can be a severe and debilitating disease. As yet, there is no cure for dementia and research into finding one is desperately underfunded.
National Dementia Week is a great opportunity to raise money that will go towards caring for people with dementia and trying to find a cure. Fundraising activities never fail to bring out the best in the in store team here in Goole. We hope our loyal customers get behind us in our efforts to raise money for this worthy cause.’
Research shows there are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK alone, with numbers predicted to rise to over two million by 2051. 225,000 people in the UK will develop dementia this year, which equates to one every three minutes.
