The team at Specsavers Golders Green store have recently been running a glasses collection and recycling scheme which support developing countries with limited access eyecare services.
Vision aid overseas
Tejin Shah, store director of Specsavers in Golders Green, has been leading the scheme which encourages local residents to donate used and unwanted glasses to global sight charity, Vision Aid Overseas. In just four months, customers donated 180 pairs of their used glasses to the store.
Glasses were dropped off into collection boxes in store by local residents and the charity will now use the proceeds from selling the reusable materials towards creating vision centres and training healthcare workers. On top of that the expertise of volunteers will be utilised to give much-needed eye examinations and treatment.
Supporting the cause
Tejin said: ‘We are a big supporter in the VAO scheme; people in developing countries do not have the same access to important eyecare services that we have in the UK. The initiative is easy yet effective and can go on to assist people less fortunate than ourselves.’
