The team at Specsavers Glenrothes undertook a physical challenge in store recently, all in aid of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA).

Audiology experts in Glenrothes were offering advice and help to customers on how to manage tinnitus throughout Tinnitus Awareness Week. In a bid to also raise funds for BTA, colleagues took turns to continually cycle on a stationary bike from 9.30am to 6pm and collectively covered 120 miles.

The Kingdom Centre audiologists also held a ‘guess the number of ear plugs’ game where customers could donate to enter for a chance to win sweet treats. With all the activity taking place throughout the week, Specsavers raised £265.

A great sum

Stewart Wilson, store director at Specsavers Glenrothes said: ’It was great to increase awareness of the British Tinnitus Association and offer some top tips to customers that have been affected with the condition.

‘I’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations throughout the week and to the store team for drumming up support and taking turns to cycle. It’s a great sum for a very worthy cause.’

Top tips for prevention

Jonathan Bell, audiology director at Specsavers Audiologists in Glenrothes, says: ‘Tinnitus is a surprisingly common problem, affecting 10% of UK adults.

‘Music is everywhere these days so everyone is at risk of hearing damage. Whether you’re listening to it through headphones on the daily commute, at your favourite bands’ gigs or even just spending a lot of time in noisy restaurants, the noise level can be very loud.

'Overexposure to loud volume can seriously affect our hearing. In fact, it only takes one instance of overexposure to cause permanent damage so it’s always best to protect your hearing before you lose it.

‘Taking regular breaks when listening to loud music, or just turning the volume down to a safe level, can help maintain healthy hearing. Many smartphones now have a handy colour-coded volume control which indicates when the noise level is high.’

Experts recommend a hearing test every two years for those over 55 or for anyone with a hearing loss.
