Sufyaan, aged 33, was born and raised in Pollokshields, in the south of Glasgow, and has worked in Specsavers Glasgow Forge for almost 13 years.
How Sufyaan got involved in optometry
Sufyaan said: ‘I have always worn glasses since I was a young boy, and for as long as I can remember so had everyone else in my family. I wore my glasses from the minute I was up in the morning until I took them off before bed at night, and I was really lost without them.
‘I ended up with such a variety of different pairs because I really loved all the different frame styles that were available. I think this connection with my glasses from such a young age inspired me into my optics career.'
He began working at Specsavers in Glasgow Forge in 2005 as a part time optical assistant alongside studying an optometry degree at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Once completing his degree, Sufyaan completed his pre-registration placement within the store, then qualified as a registered optometrist and went onto become a pre-registration optometrist supervisor.
Sufyaan always had an interest in running an optical business, and as a result the previous store director supported him and taught him more about the commercial side of optics to improve and develop his business skills. Then in 2012 when the store director moved to another store, Sufyaan took over his position with his current retail partner Angela Lucas.
Just last year he also completed his independent prescriber training which allows him to prescribe for a broad range of eye conditions to save customers a trip to their doctors or local hospital.
Why Sufyaan loves his job
Sufyaan said: ‘My favourite part of my job is seeing my customers smile after their needs have been fulfilled. I believe that our eyesight is a blessing and it really gives me pleasure to be able to be part of a process that makes customers see better and makes their life more comfortable.’
