Specsavers Galashiels has raised more than £500 for Guide Dogs during a fundraising event.
This Guide Dogs Week (6-14 October), staff sold homemade sweet treats at a bake sale, dressed in bright neon colours and raffled off prizes donated by some of the surrounding local businesses.
A face painter was also on hand for the children and guide dog Marley came along for the special occasion.
Guide Dog week was set up to recognise and raise awareness of all the devoted, hardworking canines helping those with sight loss. Specsavers has had a long relationship with the charity, which provides a lifeline to many people by providing them with a highly-trained guide dog.
A word from the store director
Stuart Forrester, store director for Galashiels, said: ‘We hope everyone in Galashiels can join us to celebrate the selfless devotion and service these dogs provide. We know it is a cause that resonates with our business and lots of our customers and past fund-raising events during this week have proved to be very popular with the local community.’
A guide dog is trained to enable its owner to get safely outside, avoid obstacles and deal with traffic. There are almost 5,000 guide dog owners in the UK who have been given a new lease of freedom thanks to their furry companions.
