The team at Specsavers in Fleet has paid for five players of Fleet of Foot Walking Football team to receive first aid training after hearing about one of the clubs players, 67 year old Tony Newman, having a cardiac arrest during a club session at Hart Leisure Centre.

The need for simple life-saving skills

Tony and Fleet of Foot founder, Robin Howard, aged 72, attended the first aid course at the Church of Our Lady in Fleet with fellow players, Peter Buck, aged 74, and Adrian Bunting, aged 76 years.

The course included CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and using an AED and everyone agreed that it had given them the confidence and skills to deal with a cardiac arrest and other serious incidents.

About Fleet of Foot

Fleet of Foot is a local walking football club with over 70 male and female members.

Robin says: 'We started the Club to play the game that we all love and our members are retired like me or wanting to increase their fitness levels. It’s grown amazingly since we launched three years ago, running three sessions a week and we are a member of Hampshire FA, playing at tournament level and going from strength to strength.'

A word from the store director

Store director David Schriefer became aware of Tony’s cardiac arrest from his father in law who is one of Tony's team mates. David says: 'The incident was very traumatic for Tony, his team mates and his family and it got me thinking, what could our business do to help? As a first step we covered the clubs emergency first aid training costs and shortly we will hold an in store fundraising drive to help the club buy an AED.'

A word from Fleet of Foot

Tony says: 'I owe my life to my quick-thinking Fleet of Foot team mates and two brilliant Leisure Centre staff (Dan and Rhonda) who used an AED to kick start my heart and perform CPR until the cavalry (paramedics) arrived.

'I now have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted under my skin to act as an AED should the need arise. The good news is that it hasn't had to and my Cardiac Consultant has said I can return to playing Walking Football.'

'Everyone at Fleet of Football says a huge thank you to Specsavers in Fleet for covering our first aid training costs and helping with fundraising to buy an AED that we can have with us everywhere we play.'
