Hats, caps and hoods were the uniform of choice as staff from Specsavers in Feltham hosted a charity fundraiser for Brain Tumour Research’s ‘Wear A Hat Day’.

Digging deep for a good cause

The team raised a total of £650 for Brain Tumour Research by holding a week–long fundraising drive, which also included a raffle. The cause is very close to the hearts of staff at the store, as the store’s director is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

Relying on charitable donations

Selcuk Arslan, store director at Specsavers Feltham, said: ‘I’m very grateful to the team for organising the event to raise much-needed funds for Brain Tumour Research. I discovered I had a brain tumour following a number of seizures while on holiday in Europe at Christmas time, and have been undergoing chemo and radiotherapy ever since. The amazing surgeons at Charing Cross Hospital managed to remove most of it but I still require additional treatment.

Brain Tumour Research relies solely on fundraising initiatives like our in-store event as the charity receives no government funding. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness and encourage others to donate, so that more patients like me can continue to receive excellent care, and hopefully one day researchers can find a cure.’

Latest equipment

Specsavers Feltham are equipped with the latest ophthalmic technology including a state-of-the-art digital retinal camera. This takes a digital image of the back of the eye, known as the fundus, which is the only part of the body where the microcirculation of blood can be examined directly.

It can detect signs of various health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and even life-threatening tumours. Specsavers offers the service at no extra charge to all customers over the age of 40 or when otherwise deemed appropriate by the optometrist.

Thanks from Brain Tumour Research

Sue Farrington Smith, Chief Executive of Brain Tumour Research, said: ‘We are very grateful to the team at Specsavers in Feltham for their support in raising vital funds and awareness of brain tumours. We are striving to fund a network of seven dedicated research centres whilst challenging the government and larger cancer charities to invest more in brain tumour research in order to help patients and their families. Help us fund the fight. Together we will fund a cure.’
