Two women have made it through to the next stage of the renowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.

Specsy duo

Tamsin Smith (16) from Grangemouth and Kerri Anderson (26) from Bo’ness have been announced as semi-finalists in the national competition which celebrates those who wear their specs with style.

Tamsin is a fifth year student at St Mungo’s High School and is studying towards four highers this year. She hopes to pursue a career related to languages.

Wearing specs with pride

She was surprised to find out she had made it to the next stage of the competition: ‘My mum was over the moon. It would be fantastic to make it to the final and have the chance to attend the awards ceremony in London.

‘I was bullied for wearing specs when I was in first year at high school – I even resorted to leaving my glasses at home. During the summer holidays that year, I realised it was silly to try to go without when I needed them and since then, I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different styles of frames.’

Kerri, mum to four-year-old Tyler, is a care assistant and is about to start studying nursing at Napier University. She said: ‘My mum persuaded me to enter the competition; I definitely wouldn’t have had the confidence to otherwise.

‘I was delighted to find out I had made it through to the next stage.’

If Tamsin or Kerri are crowned the winner, they will win a trip to New York and £10,000.

Stylish Falkirk community

The duo were welcomed to the Falkirk store by director Neville Prescott, who presented them both with a certificate and £150 gift voucher.

Neville said: ‘With two semi-finalists from the area, it’s clear to see that we have plenty of stylish spec wearers in Falkirk.

‘All our staff wish Tamsin and Kerri the best of luck – it would be fantastic to have a finalist representing Falkirk at the awards.’

Now in its 21st year, the competition raises valuable funds for anti-bullying charity Kidscape, which has totalled £300,000 to date. This year’s competition was launched by former Pussycat Doll, Kimberly Wyatt, and champions looking and feeling great in your specs.

The competition has five age categories – 16-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-59 and over 60s plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. A winner from each category will win a VIP makeover and will mingle with celebrities at a central London awards ceremony in October.
