When a customer steps over the threshold at Specsavers in Epsom, there is one friendly face that is keen to ensure you leave happy. That person is store manager, Joseph Murdoch (FBDO).
42 year old Joe has been working in the optical industry for over 22 years now and can tell a tale or two about how the industry has evolved massively during his career. 'Advancements in technology means our opticians can tell so much about a customer's health' says Joe.
'It's incredible to think that we can pick up all kinds of conditions, some live threatening and some sight threatening. But it is also the simple things that customers appreciate that makes for great job satisfaction. The child who loves his new Gruffalo frames or someone trialling contact lenses for the first time and finding it suits their lifestyle better.
'There are lots of ways we can transform people's lifestyles with corrective eyewear and that is rewarding to see.'
His career background
Joe had a slightly different route into Specsavers than others.
He admits he 'fell into' the industry when he stepped into a job as an optical receptionist to replace his sister who was off to pastures news.
He says: 'At the time, I was unloading lorries and was bored senseless! It was time for a change, and fate played its hand. It put me onto a career path that I love.
'I trained and qualified as a dispensing optician 18 years ago, then stepped up into management. Specsavers in Epsom is the 4th store I have managed and it's a great team to be part of.'
To meet Joe and his friendly team, do pop by and say hello. They are always on hand to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about your eye and hearing health.
