Local Enfield resident Anthony Robinson has been named a regional finalist in Specsavers’ annual search for its UK Spectacle Wearer of the Year. He visited the Enfield store earlier this month to meet store director, Alan Phillips and collect his bottle of champagne, regional finalist certificate and a £125 eyewear voucher to spend in store.
What is Spectacle Wearer of the Year?
The Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards were launched by Steps star Claire Richards earlier this year. There are five age categories - 16-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-59 and over 60, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
Who is Enfield’s finalist?
49-year-old Anthony beat off thousands in the East to become a regional finalist in the 45-59-year age category.
Anthony is a loyal customer of Enfield Specsavers, particularly following a motorcycle accident last year when he sustained a blow to his head.
Months after the accident, he noticed his vision was beginning to blur and booked an appointment at his local store. The optometrist who tested Anthony’s eyes discovered he had a retinal haemorrhage, which is a disorder of the eye in which bleeding occurs on the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye and can occur following severe blows to the head. Some retinal haemorrhages can go undetected for many years, however, others can cause severe impairment of vision.
Anthony was immediately referred to the Royal Free Hospital where the team concluded that he was in no danger of losing his sight. He returned back to Specsavers Enfield for a new prescription, and can now see clearly again, but says he will always be grateful to the Enfield team for how thorough they were during his eye examination and how quickly they referred him.
A word from the director
Store director Alan says: ‘We were thrilled last year to find out Anthony’s eyesight would be ok, and we were very happy to welcome him back in-store as Spectacle Wearer of the Year regional finalist. It would be an amazing highlight for us to have a winner from the area and we feel very optimistic about his potential to go all the way. Our fingers are crossed that Anthony brings home the Spectacle Wearer of the Year accolade.’
