Specsavers Book of the Year 2014 has been announced and the winner is Jessie Burton with her best-selling debut title, The Miniaturist.

The public voted for the critically-acclaimed seller and it won by a significant margin ahead of the ten category winners. In light of the announcement, Specsavers Enfield is encouraging customers to put down their phones and gadgets and pick up a book.

Setting the scene

The Miniaturist, which is set in seventeenth century Amsterdam, boasts the title of the best-selling literary debut hardback of the decade.

Author Jesse Burton also won the New Writer of the Year prize at the Specsavers National Book Awards 2014, which, in turn qualified her for the Specsavers Book of the Year public vote.

New year’s resolutions

Store director, Alan Phillips, said: ‘There are so many wonderful books and stories available and we’re encouraging people to think about committing to reading more books as part of their new year’s resolutions. ‘The Specsavers Enfield team, myself included, will be personally trying to read more in 2015 and put our digital devices down more!’
