Specsavers Ellesmere Port has supported a Wirral Taekwondo Academy through its medal-winning European Championships campaign.
The store sponsored the group, which put a call out for help to cover the cost of transportation to Switzerland for the international event, as well as entry fees in the competition.
A haul of medals
The trip resulted in a haul of medals for the Wirral club, with 12-year-old Nathan Saunders becoming a double European champion in the junior division, as well as picking up a silver and bronze medal.
The club’s senior instructor Richard Jones was named champion in the ‘forms division’ and also brought home a bronze medal.
Six European Champion honours
In total, Wirral Taekwondo Academy bagged six European champion honours, two silver and three bronze medals. Medals were won by Ian Bruce (gold), Anna Williams (gold), Christian Farrell (gold and silver) and Lani Bruce (bronze).
Richard Saunders, chief instructor at the Wirral Taekwondo Academy, says: ‘The European Championships were a huge success for the club. Everyone performed incredibly well, and to come home with this amount of medals is more than we could have hoped for.
Boost for competitors
‘We’re really grateful to Specsavers for its support. It’s such a boost for competitors when the local community gets behind them, and that’s just what the store did. There are various costs involved in taking part in a competition like this and the donation really eased the load.’
An inspirational group
Robbie Byrne, store director at Specsavers Ellesmere Port, adds: ‘The team did the Wirral proud and we’re delighted to have been able to help them. We really believe in championing the good things going on in our community and the Wirral Taekwondo Academy, which trains up so many youngsters, is an inspirational group.’
