Two young people from Ebbw Vale are celebrating securing full-time jobs after successfully completing their apprenticeships at Specsavers.
Holly Dobbs, 19, and Sam Kirkby, 18, both from Ebbw Vale, have both finished their apprenticeships after joining the Bethcar Street store last summer.
Learning the ropes
Ms Dobbs spent 12 months learning the ropes from clinical and retail staff and is now an optical assistant with her sights set on moving up the ranks.
Meanwhile, Mr Kirby joined Specsavers after finishing his school studies, training in the store’s state-of-the-art laboratory, where customers’ frames are glazed before they are collected.
‘Since I started working at Specsavers, my knowledge of optics has increased rapidly,’ says Ms Dobbs. ‘My colleagues and managers have been so supportive, showing me the ropes and clearly explaining the vital services Specsavers can provide to customers in Ebbw Vale.’
Mr Kirby adds: ‘I’m proud to have completed my apprenticeship and, as an assistant lab technician, I’m looking forward to getting the chance to glaze and prepare glasses for customers. I’m really excited about my future at Specsavers and I’m looking forward to working with the senior lab technicians, and other staff, to develop my skills.’
Specsavers supports a number of apprentices across its 40 stores in south and mid-Wales, providing young people with work-based learning and chances to develop careers in retail, optometry and audiology.
Sejal Shah, Specsavers store director in Ebbw Vale, says: ‘A new job can be a daunting prospect and, for many young people, they may not be sure if it is right for them. That’s why we offer a flexible system where new starters can find a role that suits them – whether that is on the shop floor on in the laboratory.
‘Holly and Sam both showed enthusiasm as soon as they joined, and have taken on board the training and support we have given them, flourishing into their new full-time roles. We’re extremely happy with how they have progressed in the past 12 months and have every faith they will continue to impress us in-store.’
