Two glamorous Dunfermline women who wear their glasses with pride have been crowned regional finalists in a prestigious Specsavers competition.

Ellen Elliott, 62, and Florence Ramage, 20, will be representing Scotland in two different age categories in this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

Ellen fought off competition from across the country to become one of just two Scottish finalists in the 60 plus category.

And Florence Ramage, 20, is one of two Scottish finalists in the 16 to 24 category.

Star-studded awards

If the ladies get through to the next stage, they will be invited to a star-studded awards ceremony in London – and if one of them lands the top spot, they will take home £10,000.

Ellen, who works with young people with additional support needs, is very proud to be involved in a competition which supports Kidscape.

She said: ‘A couple of the teenage girls I work with in my job didn’t want to wear their glasses and one said she was being bullied. I encouraged her to wear them and to wear them with pride. Now, when she arrives at school, she says ‘Look, Miss Elliott, I’ve got my glasses on!.

‘My glasses give me so much confidence and I love to coordinate my outfits with them. It’s great to see the youngsters embracing that and wearing their glasses with pride.

‘It would be a dream come true if I get to the next stage.’

Quirky look

Florence, a sound production student who is heading to Abertay to study sound and music for games, wears her glasses with fashion in mind. She said: ‘I got involved after my mum told me about the competition and I really didn’t expect to get this far.

‘I used to be really nervous wearing them but I think glasses are much more fashionable now.

I only have one pair of glasses but I make sure I build my style around them. They make me feel like I have a unique style. I feel like I’m making a statement every time I wear them. ‘I feel great in my glasses and get lots of compliments. It would be amazing to reach the final and to be recognised for having a quirky look.’

To celebrate their success, Ellen and Florence were invited to their local Specsavers store in Dunfermline and were presented with champagne, a £125 Specsavers voucher and a certificate, by store directors Grace and Andrew Hepburn.

Grace said: ‘Ellen and Florence have done incredibly well to get to this stage in the competition and should be very proud.

‘We’re rooting for them and would love to see them in the final.’
