Specsavers opticians in Dewsbury have made a significant investment in the latest in optical technology by becoming the first opticians in Europe to have a state-of-the-art Nidek dry lens cutter installed by Birmingham Optical (B. Op) in its lab.
Efficient service for customers
The store has made a six figure investment in the SE-1 dry cut edger, which will enable the lab team to streamline its processes, in order to maximise output. The machine, which has been imported from Japan, will future-proof the Dewsbury store, whilst providing a more efficient service for its customers.
The technology also provides environmental improvements during the processing of lenses, due to the fact that is uses significantly less water than traditional machinery used across the industry.
Due to the machinery being the first to be fitted in Europe, a specialist engineer was flown out from Japan, in order to install the technology into the West Yorkshire branch.
Speaking about the investment store director Paul Smith commented: ‘Our traditional machines had been working overtime to carry out their function resulting in breakdowns in operation. We decided to update our equipment, which now means that we have significantly reduced the time that it takes to create customers’ new glasses.
250 pairs of glasses per day!
'Essentially, the new machinery will mean that within an eight hour day, up to 250 pairs of spectacles could be produced, if necessary, which is phenomenal!’

This new high speed dry cut system serves to highlight the vast range of edging products B.Op provide for the Specsavers Group and indeed the optical manufacturing industry.
‘The SE-1 Xtrimer offers a unique V Formation fixed tooling design which allows the store to process a much greater range of lenses through their in-store glazing facility. Trivex and Polycarbonate lenses can be glazed at an incredible speed and to an industry leading quality of finish.
‘The unit has a very small footprint and linked with Nidek's latest software package IRX Editor, remote access is now available to B.Op engineer support team.
‘After sales support has been important as this was the first SE-1 sold to the UK optical marketplace and we have been in touch with the store weekly to monitor progress. B.Op has introduced a pro active service support plan and engineers from Nidek Japan have also visited the site to ensure the new system exceeds client expectations.

Improvements all around
The news follows a major expansion within the Dewsbury store, in order to create two brand new state-of-the-art ground floor eye test rooms, which means that fewer customers now need to use the store’s staircase.
