Laoise McNulty, a 23 year old student from Letterkenny has just completed her second year studying optometry at Ulster University in Coleraine and is currently on a summer placement in Specsavers Derry / Londonderry getting hands-on experience.
Putting theory into practice
Laoise explains, ‘For the past two years my BSc course has focused on the theory of visual health and becoming familiar with all the equipment used in assessing patients. The opportunity to work in Specsavers is going to add an invaluable practical element to that learning and really bring it to life.’
‘I have worked with Specsavers from January at weekends and then I’m here five days per week during the summer. I have really enjoyed my time here at Specsavers on Ferryquay street and everyone in the store is so committed to my development and extremely helpful. I have learnt a lot from my time here at Specsavers and I’m looking forward to a career in optometry.’
Specsavers in touch with students
Specsavers store director Maeve Walsh added, ‘We are delighted to host a placement student each summer. It keeps us in touch with the Optometry Department at the University and allows us to get to know the students who are potentially our future employees. The programme is also an excellent way for us to give something back to the profession so it’s a win/win all round.’
