Contact lenses are more advanced and more comfortable than ever.

At Specsavers in Derby, we know many people love their glasses, but we also know that sometimes they’re just not convenient. Contact lenses will ensure you can see no matter what you’re doing, from playing sport to partying.

Uan Gohil, store director at Specsavers in the Intu Centre, Derby debunks some common misconceptions surrounding contact lenses and demonstrates that they can be a convenient eye care solution for almost every prescription and budget.

What types of lenses are on offer?

‘There are lots of different types of contact lenses to choose from depending on whether you want to wear them every day or just once in a while,’ explained Uan.

‘Our dedicated contact lens opticians in store will be happy to advise on the right ones for you. We even offer our own easyvision contact lenses, which are great value and made to the same high standards as other leading brands.’

Specsavers offer three types of contact lenses:

  • Daily Disposables: if you don’t want the hassle of a solution, or just want lenses for occasional use, these are ideal. Simply wear once, then throw away. They are perfect for travellers who don’t want to lug around bottles of solution or those with hay fever or allergies, as a fresh contact daily is gentler on the eye.
  • Twice-monthly Disposables: these lenses can be worn every day for two weeks – but remember to take them out at night. They typically allow five times more oxygen through the lens than standard contacts, meaning they are more comfortable, as well as being good for your eye health. They’re also available for people with astigmatism.
  • Monthly Disposables: the best value option, monthly contact lenses start at just £5 for a month’s worth of lenses. They can be worn every day with a cleaning regime, and offer the same comfort and permeability as the twice-monthlies.

In store expertise

Uan continued: ‘No matter what your budget, the team provides the same care and support to all our customers and ensures there is an eyecare solution for everyone.

‘Before you buy anything, you’ll have an assessment with one of our qualified contact lens specialists to discuss how often and for how long you want to wear your lenses and any specific activities you wish to use them for.

‘They’ll also perform a contact lens-specific eye check to make sure that your eyes are suitable for contact lenses. Plus, you’ll receive advice and tuition to help you wear your lenses successfully and with confidence.’

Try before you buy

It’s important that you enjoy and feel comfortable in contact lenses, so Specsavers Derby offer a ‘try before you buy’ scheme on state of the art easyvision and Acuvue® lenses.

‘Once you’ve had your assessment and have decided on which lens is right for you, you can take home and try one pair of monthly lenses or five pairs of daily disposable lenses for free,’ explained Uan. ‘We think that it’s crucial that our customers have experienced the realities of the contact lens that they have been recommended before they commit to buying them.’

Contact lens care

While aftercare appointments are included in the easycare package, there are some top tips that you can follow to make using contact lenses hassle free.

‘Putting lenses in and taking them out is always something that takes some getting used to,’ said Uan. ‘Remember to start with clean hands, as any impurities or grit can cause irritation. When the lens is on your finger, check that it doesn’t have a lip on it, as this may mean that it’s inside out. It’s also easiest to put them in facing a mirror so that you can position them correctly.

‘For multi-use lenses, always rub them gently with a few drops of solution after taking them out, and place them carefully in your contact lens case. The case should be clean and filled with solution.

‘And don’t forget: never use tap water to clean your lenses or contact lens case as this can lead to eye infections. If you have any questions about lenses, don’t hesitate to come and talk to us in store.’
