Specsavers in Dartford was honoured to invite Dartford Mayor, Cllr Rosanna Currans to the store recently to highlight the importance of regular eye examinations.
The importance of eye tests
Many of us take our eyesight for granted, but the necessity of regular eye examinations is important as changes to vision can be very gradual and as such, we may oversee the problem until serious damage has already occurred.
Statistics have shown that of the 1.8 million people in the UK suffering from sight loss over 50% of these cases could have been prevented by regular examinations. Some experts have suggested that the number of people in the UK with sight loss could double to four million by 2050.
These are worrying statistics but by adopting a healthy lifestyle and by having regular eye examinations people can dramatically reduce this risk.
Raising awareness for eye health
Kam Singh, store director at the Dartford Specsavers store said, ‘We wanted to raise awareness of how following some very simple steps, like booking an eye examination, can help to keep your eyes healthy.
‘Eye examinations can easily detect common sight conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts as well as more serious conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and can even recognise someone at risk of stroke. If caught early these conditions can be treated and managed.
‘It’s fundamental for people to understand the important of eye tests – I cannot stress this enough.’
