There’s a rich diversity amongst the ever-growing team at the Darlington store.
Established in the town in 1999 the store has expanded steadily and attracted a wealth of talent to serve the thousands of customers from the area.
Employing almost 50 people, the team includes optometrists from all corners of the UK and as far afield as South Korea and Australia.
Dr Nigel Best, who has carried out research in dry eye and contact lenses and who works closely with Specsavers’ professional training team, is based in Darlington and together with his fellow director Gery Learmont has developed the multi-skilled team which has over 300 years’ optical experience between them.
Three of the team have worked in the store since it first opened its doors and the latest recruits include two apprentices. There are team members of all ages, with a 46 year age gap between the oldest!
The store is extremely popular and to meet demand it has six consulting rooms where around 450 eye tests are carried out each week – that’s nearly 2000 every month.
Customers have a wide-ranging choice with over 1,000 frames in store of all colours, shapes and sizes to cater for all tastes and budgets.
A recent innovation in Darlington Specsavers is the introduction of a new Hearcare room, enabling customers to have their sight and their hearing checked.
A word from the store director
Gery Learmont, director of Specsavers in Darlington, said: ‘We are proud to be part of the community in Darlington and to have such continuity in our team. We’ve served some families since we first set up here and have seen them grow up and bring their own children to us. It’s very rewarding and a real privilege to be able to serve our customers in this way.’
