Specsavers in Darlington will celebrate 15 years of caring for the town’s vision this month.
Store First Opened Its Doors in 1999
The store first opened its doors on 21 December 1999 with just five members of staff and two store directors, Dr Nigel Best and Gery Learmont. It had just two testing rooms on the ground floor.
Throughout the last 15 years, the opticians has expanded to six consulting rooms and also has a designated contact lens department. It now has 39 members of staff, a few of which have been there since day one.
Store director, Dr Nigel Best, became just the second optometrist in the UK to gain a Doctor of Optometry degree in 2013. He was awarded his diploma by Aston University after completing his thesis on dry eye and contact lenses.
Many Refurbishments and Upgrades to the Service Over the Years
Gery Learmont, store director, says: ‘Specsavers has been serving the people of Darlington for over 15 years now and during this time we are thrilled to have brought the highest standards of service and expertise to the town.
‘We have had a number of refurbishments and upgrades to our service over the years, including the last one which took place earlier this year to include our new audiology centre so we can help people with their hearing as well as their eyesight.
‘We also recently invested £80,000 on some of the most advanced glazing technology that is available to private practices meaning our in store lab can glaze prescriptions in as little as an hour.
‘We have enjoyed the last 15 years immensely and now serve 87,714 registered customers. We look forward to welcoming some of them during December and we look forward to the next 15 years.’
