A Cowbridge opticians has recruited two new members of staff to manage customer demand after reopening for routine care.
The Specsavers store on High Street has appointed 23-year-old Dan Spillane, a recent optometry graduate of Cardiff University, as well as 34-year-old Bethan John, increasing the staff count to 10.
Mr Spillane began working at Specsavers in Stockport as an optical assistant when he was 17, returning regularly when he was not studying. In his new role in Cowbridge, he will undertake a one-year pre-registration course that will allow him to perform sight tests and contact lenses services under supervision.
‘Beginning my in-store optical training in such unusual circumstances was not without its challenges. But, fortunately, I am surrounded by friendly and supportive colleagues who have really helped me to find my feet and feel at home in my new job.’
Ms John also began working at Specsavers at 17, spending nine years in the Barry store as an optical assistant before completing training to become a dispensing optician.
However, after having two children, Ms John decided to take a career break from Specsavers. Five years on, she’s returned to the company and is training to rejoin the dispensing optician register.
‘No employer like Specsavers’
She says: ‘I’ve worked for a few organisations during my career, but I can confidently say there’s no employer like Specsavers.
‘The Cowbridge team, much like in Barry 14 years ago, have welcomed me with open arms, and I’m excited to see what the future brings in-store.’
Routine optical home visits have now restarted in Wales, after Specsavers opticians provided emergency care during lockdown. Specsavers can provide eye care services at home to those who are unable to get to their local store without assistance.
Andrew Moss, ophthalmic director at Specsavers in Cowbridge, adds: ‘Having only recently reopened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen customer demand surge to an all-time high. Having Dan and Beth on board will really help us through this transition.
‘The duo have been a great addition to our team, and I look forward to seeing how they develop over the coming months.’
