Optical assistant Laura McKernan has completed Dementia Friends training which is designed to help Laura and other staff members become better qualified to understand the needs of customers suffering from dementia.
Laura, who is also a trained first aider, completed the Alzheimers’ Society organised training session which covers all aspect of dementia. It highlights how dementia can affect each person differently and how senses can be affected including sight and hearing.

Natalie Bradley, store director at Specsavers Cookstown said: ‘We’re delighted to roll out Dementia Friends training here in Cookstown and congratulations to Laura who has already completed it. Other staff members are undertaking the training and I feel it is very much helping us as a team support any patients who have dementia as well as their family members.’
Staff wear Dementia badges
Dementia trained staff are recognised as ‘Dementia Friends’ and wear a badge on their uniforms to demonstrate their awareness and knowledge to customers.
