Cookstown Specsavers hearcare team is highlighting that treating hearing loss can have a significant impact in preventing dementia following a recently published study in medical magazine, The Lancet. The new international study said mid-life hearing loss tops nine risk factors which contribute to the risk of dementia.
Look after hearing in middle age
Joanne Torrens, Specsavers Hearcare Director explained: ‘The link between hearing loss and dementia is not new. But too often we dismiss it as a natural part of aging. The international study highlights the importance of looking after your hearing in middle age – not when it is too late and the damage has already been done.’
‘The risk of dementia can be significantly reduced if people take good care of their hearing and that means getting regular hearing tests. It should be as much part of their lives as joining a gym or taking other steps towards a healthier lifestyle.’
Free hearing tests
Specsavers offers free 3-minute hearing checks with no appointment necessary for anyone who is concerned about their hearing. From the results of that check the screener then advises the customer if he/she would benefit from a full hearing test.
This is also free and takes about an hour. After that the results are explained and the range of hearing assistance and options available is discussed.
