Naomi Stewart, a 20 year old student from Limavady has just completed her second year of optometry at Ulster University in Coleraine and is now looking forward to a six week summer placement in Specsavers Coleraine getting hands-on experience.
Putting theory into practice
Naomi explains, ‘For the past two years my BSc course has focused on the theory of visual health and becoming familiar with all the equipment used in assessing patients. The opportunity to work in Specsavers is going to add an invaluable practical element to that learning and really bring it to life.’
‘The summer placement programme at Specsavers is so well organised and structured. I get a workbook and USB stick which provides a huge amount of information. The workbook allows me to keep detailed notes of what I have learned and I can see myself referring to it throughout the rest of my studies and beyond.’
'Everyone in the store is so committed to my development. I’m supervised by Alison McCauley and Danielle Wilson and am getting great experience on the shop floor and hope to soon carry out some dispensing!’
Specsavers in touch with students
Specsavers store director Judith Ball added, ‘We are delighted to host a placement student each summer. It keeps us in touch with the Optometry Department at the University and allows us to get to know the students who are potentially our future employees. The programme is also an excellent way for us to give something back to the profession so it’s a win win all round.’
