Specsavers Coleraine are now even more focused on detecting signs of glaucoma in customers with four of their staff achieving the Professional Certificate in Glaucoma from Ulster University.

Puff test

Store director Judith Ball explains, ‘Glaucoma is the second biggest cause of blindness in the world but with no symptoms in the early stages many people are unaware that they have it. Regular sight tests which include a ‘puff test’ can pick up the early signs which vastly improves the chance of saving someone’s vision.’

Improving detection

‘Whilst all of our optometrists are qualified to detect the early signs of the disease through the puff test we are always keen to extend our knowledge and increase our skills. The 12 week course at Ulster University provided theoretical and practical approaches to improving detection and management of the condition which we are already integrating into our daily eye examinations.’

Two yearly eye tests

Specsavers recommends that eye tests should be taken at least every two years. Anyone with concerns about their eye health should contact or visit the Coleraine Specsavers store immediately – even without an appointment.
