Specsavers' Coalville store was recently audited for Health and Safety compliance and received the Platinum Two award, which recognises six years of consecutively passing their health and safety audit.

Compliance Administrator Adam Bucklow talks to Coalville store director, Shailan Ruparelia, to find out more:

Adam: Firstly, congratulations on the Health and Safety compliance award. What did you do to achieve this?

Shailan: Consistency is the key. It is important to keep on top of the monthly checks and training. Each month we all train on an aspect of health and safety. This training is added onto the end of our weekly in-store training sessions, or done early in the morning for those who miss the training session. Intention is important. Our intention is not just to satisfy the auditor; our intention is to create a happy and safe environment for the team and have the highest standards possible.

The team take pride in being their best. We adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. We are not perfect but we aim to work towards perfection by learning from our mistakes and by learning from all the feedback we receive. We learn from previous audits and always try to improve our standards.

Adam: What is the most common health and safety issue that you experience?

Shailan: It is always a little challenging to keep the team motivated about health and safety. This is why frequent training of short durations is important. Daily, weekly and monthly checklists are important.

Adam: How do you plan to achieve the Platinum Three award next year?

Shailan: The team need to be disciplined and organised and work with attention to detail. Health and safety procedures and processes are part of our culture. If we maintain this and we learn from comments made by the auditor, we should score 100% next year.
