Specsavers in Clydebank has relaunched in a larger unit in the Clyde Shopping Centre. The store, which opened in the town 20 years ago, has moved from a small unit to one triple the size across the mall, with an investment of £500,000.
Customers Stephen Coombe and Sheena Johnstone were star attractions on launch day and helped to officially unveil the new store. A visit to the store in 1998 started Stephen on a lifesaving journey. After an eye examination, Clydebank store director Charles Kinsey referred Stephen to a paediatrician.
Stephen was found to have a brain tumour pressing against his optic nerve – a condition known as craniopharyngioma, which affects only one in five million children.
Charles’ referral saw Stephen endure lifesaving operations – and now, at 23 and in good health, Stephen was delighted to be invited along to the relaunch party and to thank Charles again for his help.
Stephen said: ‘If it wasn’t for Charles and his family I wouldn’t be here today. I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done. They started the ball rolling and helped save my life.’
Store director, Charles Kinsey, said: ‘It’s wonderful to welcome Stephen back into the store and to see him in such good health.’ Sheena Johnstone, from Old Kilpatrick, has been a customer at Specsavers Clydebank since its first week of opening, 20 years ago.
Sheena said: ‘Staff provide a fantastic service and are always very friendly and attentive. I’m looking forward to my appointments in the new store.’
Guide dogs and their handlers were also in store on the launch day to reinforce the store’s commitment to fundraising for the Guide Dogs charity, and a magician kept everyone entertained in the mall.
Moving across the shopping centre will allow the store to provide an enhanced customer experience, which will include cutting edge technology and an iPad-based glasses fitting system. There are also plans to launch an audiology service in the near future.
Charles added: ‘Our customers are at the heart of the business so it was very important for us to have our customers with us to celebrate our relaunch. ‘We’re delighted that so many people turned out on the day to help us mark the occasion. We look forward to serving the community for decades to come in our new and improved store.’
