Former ‘Saturday girl’ Jemma Paynter has recently been appointed director of Specsavers Canvey Island.

The 28-year-old from Basildon started working for Specsavers in her home town 13 years ago on Saturdays while she was still at school. During her time at the store Jemma went to college and studied a three-year course to become a qualified dispensing optician.

She then worked her way up to assistant store manager and when directors Lee Hansford and Alan McLean decided to open Specsavers Canvey Island three years ago, she was recruited as store manager.

New opportunity

Jemma said: ‘I’ve loved working for Specsavers and when this store opened I really wanted the new challenge as store manager. Now I’m looking forward to the next chapter as store director and I’ve got some exciting plans for the store, to really get us more involved with the community.’

In her spare time Jemma is part of a dog group with her husband Brad and two French Bulldogs Wilson and Louie. Dogs are a real passion for Jemma and the store recently sponsored a Guide Dog called Dorris.

The store’s £1,000 contribution means Dorris will complete her 18 months’ training to become a fully-fledged Guide Dog, before being paired with her new owner.

Charity and community

Charity work is important to Jemma and the staff at Specsavers Canvey Island, and they have plans to do a lot of local community work over the coming year, as well as building relationships with local schools.
