It is vital that you don’t neglect the need for eye protection whether you are staying at home or jetting off abroad this summer.

Craig Selbie, store director at Specsavers in Cameron Toll is reminding people to safeguard their sight and has the following advice to offer:

Not all sunglasses are the same

It is important to remember that not all sunglasses offer adequate protection. Specsavers stores can offer advice on choosing sunglasses which block out 100% of dangerous UVA and UVB rays, whilst allowing perfect clarity of vision.

Wear your sunglasses to avoid future complications

Excessive exposure to UV rays can cause a painful irritation in the cornea, at the front of the eye. It can also trigger Photokeratitis, a form of sunburn, which can lead to the development of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and in some cases, ocular tumours.

The damage is not limited to the eyes

As well as causing damage to the eyes, sunlight can also age the skin around them. The natural reaction to bright sunlight is for us to screw up our eyes, which strains the surrounding facial muscles. This causes the formation of temporary crow’s feet, which become permanent once the skin’s elastin fibres become damaged by exposure to UV rays.

There are lots of styles of sunglasses available to suit all tastes and budgets so there’s no excuse for not protecting your eyes this summer!
