A stylish Edinburgh man has been chosen from hundreds of people across Scotland as a regional finalist in the renowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.

Gareth Quinn, a semi-finalist in the 16-24 age category, could scoop £10,000 if he wins, as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 22nd annual awards hosted by Specsavers in London.

One of just ten regional semi-finalists from across Scotland, Gareth entered the competition online after seeing an advert on Facebook.

Pleasant surprise

Gareth said: ‘I forgot I applied for the competition so was very pleasantly surprised when I received the call to tell me I was a regional semi-finalist.

‘I always wear my glasses and found people didn’t recognise me when I tried wearing contacts.

‘I have been wearing glasses since I was young, and I've been able to see how they have evolved so much since then to become more of a fashion statement rather than just a necessity.

‘I think the Spectacle Wearer of the Year campaign is a fantastic idea, especially the financial support it raises for Kidscape in order to help children who are being bullied and provide resources and training for schools and professionals working with young people.'

Gareth was invited to his local Specsavers store at Edinburgh Cameron Toll by store director Damien Noade who presented him with a bottle of champagne, certificate and a £150 glasses voucher to mark his achievement.

Damien said: ‘It was great to welcome Gareth back to the store to celebrate. This is the first time we’ve had a regional finalist from Edinburgh Cameron Toll so all the staff wish Gareth the best of luck – it would be fantastic to have a finalist representing Edinburgh at the awards.’

Now in its 22nd year, the competition raises valuable funds for anti-bullying charity Kidscape, which has totalled £400,000 to date.
