The Surrey Heath Sports Awards, co-sponsored by Specsavers' Camberley store celebrated the best in local sporting achievement on Sunday 19 October at an invite-only ceremony at Camberley Theatre.

Organised by Surrey Heath Borough Council, the awards honour people from all over the borough who have excelled in sports including football, basketball, judo and cricket.

The evening is one of the most anticipated events in the borough calendar as a chance to celebrate the achievements of local athletes, clubs, coaches and volunteers. Nominations were open to the public for two months between July and August.

The awards were attended by around 350 members of the local sporting community and selected VIPs including the Mayor of Surrey Heath Cllr Bob Paton.


Specsavers sponsored four of the 2014 award categories which were presented by Camberley store director, Lateef Iqbal.

  • Sports Team of the Year won by Heatherside Galaxy football team
  • Young Sports Personality of the Year -  Jade Blackburn, England U16 Basketball
  • Sports Personality of the Year - Owen Livesey, Camberley Judo Club
  • Outstanding Service to Sport  - Reg Rapley, Windlesham Bowls Club

• Surrey Youth Games, Performance of the Games: Ellie Kirby Surrey Youth Games, Volunteer of the Games: Mandy Pack

• Coach of the Year (sponsored by Active Surrey) Pete Collins, Deepcut Community FC

Each of the winners had a fantastic story and was all fully deserving of their accolade.

All winners of the Sports Awards, who ranged in age from as young as eight through to their seventies, will automatically be entered into the county-wide Surrey Sports Awards which are held in December.

It was a great night and Specsavers Camberley are extremely proud to have been a part of the evening.

Camberley Mayor, Bob Paton, said as part of his speech that the store is ‘a great asset to the community’ and the store is ‘deserving of our support’.
