A former Caerphilly supermarket worker has his sights set on a long career in eyecare after becoming a dispensing optician.
Matthew Heath, 31, knew little about eyecare when he started working as an optical assistant at Specsavers six years ago, but has quickly developed a passion for it. Having recently qualified as a dispensing optician, Mr Heath is already studying to become a contact lens optician.
‘Fantastic career path’
‘I was working at a local supermarket six years ago when I saw an optical assistant post advertised for Specsavers in Penarth,’ says Mr Heath, who transferred to the Caerphilly store a year later.
‘In a relatively short period, I have learned so much and am now on a fantastic career path that has changed my future for the better. I can’t imagine doing anything else.’ Mr Heath is also responsible for delivering staff training and induction sessions for new starters at Specsavers in Caerphilly.
‘I thoroughly enjoy the training and development aspect of my role because I’ve been through it myself,’ he says.
‘I know first-hand the opportunities and challenges workplace learning can bring and can offer support and encouragement.’
Geraint Jones, store director at Specsavers in Caerphilly, adds: ‘We are thrilled, but not surprised, by Matthew’s latest success. He is driven, ambitious and has been an asset to our team from the start.
‘Career development is something we take seriously. We encourage all of our staff to meet their full potential, for their sake and our customers, who benefit from an informed and professional team. We’re looking forward to supporting Matthew on the next stage of his career journey.’
