The Byres Road store joined forces with Scottish Rugby and the GUINNESS PRO12 to create an April Fools’ Day funny that went down a storm on social media.

The rugby union governing body and organisers of the league made a spoof announcement that former Glasgow Warriors captain Al Kellock had been appointed to referee this year’s GUINNESS PRO12 Final at BT Murrayfield.

Kellock – who has no previous experience of being a referee – was filmed swotting up reading “Rugby Union for Dummies” and training at Scotstoun Stadium before heading to Specsavers (official sponsor of the GUINNESS PRO12 referees) for a pre-match eye test.

Test room clue

Keen-eyed viewers who watched the video announcement might have spotted a clue on the wall of the West End store’s test room revealing the story was an April Fools’ Day joke. While Kellock IS a GUINNESS PRO12 Final Ambassador, he won’t really be taking on the role of referee.

Byres Road store director and optometrist Martin O’Neill said: 'One part of the story was very much real – Al Kellock did drop in for an eye examination – but the rest of the story was tongue-in-cheek.

'Going by all the shares and comments on social media, some people spotted right away that the story was a joke, and some were taken in – but if you didn’t spot the words ‘April Fool’ in the background of the test room, perhaps it’s time for a trip to Specsavers! ‘We enjoyed taking part in the fun.’
