Specsavers in Buxton has donated £100 to a determined and dedicated 19-year-old, declaring him its inspirational person of the year.

George Lomas, who suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and has learning difficulties, has undertaken months of physical training in order to raise £710, including the donation from Specsavers, for Cancer Research UK.

18 months of training to complete his challenge

He has spent the past 18 months going to the gym, swimming, and walking to strengthen his body in order to complete a total of 300,000 steps in 30 days throughout June - 10,000 steps a day.

Although for many 10,000 steps a day might not sound strenuous, for someone suffering with cerebral palsy, this required extensive training and determination.

The team at Specsavers Buxton heard of George’s efforts and got behind the youngster, as a show of their admiration and respect for the challenge he was taking on.

Overcoming additional health problems

During his training, George was also diagnosed with scoliosis of the spine, a painful disease caused by his cerebral palsy, which further increased his pain and discomfort.

Despite the additional health problem George was driven by the prospect of helping others, and refusing to give up, he managed to complete his challenge.

Cancer Research UK is a charity particularly close to the Lomas family’s hearts, as George’s great-grandad passed away with bowel cancer, and his godfather has recently lost a long battle with two rare forms of the disease.

An inspiration to Buxton

George’s mum, Clare Lomas, says: ‘Our family is so proud of George’s achievement. He has battled through pain, tiredness, and seizures in order to raise as much money as possible for an amazing charity. We’re grateful to everyone who supported him, including the Buxton Specsavers store.’

Tom Rhodes, director of the Buxton Specsavers store, says: ‘George is a wonderful young man who has wowed all of us here in the store with his determination. We wish him all the best with his health and would like to say a huge well done for completing his challenge. He really is an inspiration.’
