The spotlight is being shone on a member of the team at Specsavers in Burnham-on-Sea, whose achievements are being showcased as part of a new exhibition.
As a former member of the UK Youth Parliament, 18-year-old Thrinayani Ramakrishnan is a passionate campaigner, helping young people’s voices to be heard. Thrinayani also holds the Sandy Padgett Pride of Somerset Youth Award and is currently a UNICEF UK Youth Advisor.
Celebration of work
Her work is now being celebrated through the Women by Women exhibition, which is being shown at The McMillan Theatre until Friday 9 September, inspiring youngsters across the county.
‘It’s wonderful to be part of this exhibition after being nominated by the Steering Group. I know lots of young people have dedicated their time to the project over the last 12 months and to have been selected as one of Somerset’s inspiring women is a huge privilege,’ said Thrinayani. ‘As well as providing some inspiration to those who visit the exhibition, the youngsters who have been involved have developed an array of useful skills, which will be really important going forward.
‘I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at Specsavers and those in the Burnham community who have supported my work, particularly the UNICEF fundraising we did last year – without their support it wouldn’t have been possible.
‘I’ve been passionate about getting the voices of other young people heard for several years, particularly through my roles within the UK Youth Parliament and on the select committee for Votes for 16-year-olds. Youngsters play a vital role in the community and I believe their voices deserve to be heard.’
‘We’re all thrilled for Thirnayani,’ said store direct Rama Venkat. ‘It’s a fantastic achievement which she should rightly be very proud of. She has accomplished a huge amount for someone so young and to be recognised in this way amongst the Somerset community is just brilliant.’
Delivered by the Somerset Film and Somerset Rural Youth Project, Women by Women has engaged young people during the last 12 months as they have discovered inspiring Somerset women. The project has also enabled those involved to develop vital skills, including interviewing and digital skills.
