Did you know that, according to the RNIB, having diabetes could make you up to 20 times more likely to lose your sight than someone without the condition?
That is due to a complication called diabetic retinopathy, which is caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye.
The good news is that, with regular eye tests and attending annual diabetic screening appointments, diabetic retinopathy can be managed alongside diabetes. The team at Specsavers Burgess Hill in Church Road are here to help.
Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave CBE has recently spoken out in support of the need to look after your eyes, after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes himself.
Regular eye tests
Maggie Johnson, store director in Burgess Hill, said: ‘If you do have diabetic retinopathy, you might not know it, as it can be symptomless at an early stage.
‘That is why having regular eye tests, and attending your diabetic screening appointments annually, is so important.’
