For fans of BBC’s, The Apprentice, you’ll know that Lord Sugar’s been having a fair amount of difficulty finding anyone who seems worthy of investment in the new series.

However, it’s a completely different story at Specsavers Brixton, who have had much more success in their search for an apprentice.

Kade Rodriques

In January 2017, the store dipped their toes into the water of a brand, new apprenticeship scheme and recruited Brixton-local Kade Rodriques.

Kade had previously been undertaking a course in Sports Science but quickly discovered that this wasn’t the right field for him. He took the step to applying for an optical apprenticeship with Specsavers at the results have been excellent.

Kade said: ‘I’ve really enjoyed my time at Specsavers so far and I’m just grateful really that I was given the opportunity to take the job.

'There’s quite a lot of doom and gloom surrounding the prospects of young people at the moment – both in terms of job opportunities and housing – so it’s really good to see Specsavers looking to invest their time and efforts into developing the career prospects of young people.

‘It’s a really good environment, where I’m constantly learning and developing my professionalism and I’m really looking forward to qualifying as an optical assistant at the beginning of next year.’

The scheme

Specsavers’ one-year apprenticeship is open to anyone over the age of 16 and requires no previous optical experience. Those who complete it become qualified optical assistants with the chance of full-time employment at Specsavers.

The programme also opens up further studying opportunities to successful apprentices, with the potential to qualify as a dispensing optician within five years.

'Class act'

Matt Malone, store manager at Specsavers Brixton said: ‘Kade has been a class act ever since he got here. He’s an incredibly intelligent young man and has been able to learn extremely quickly on the job.’

‘Kade’s provided a superb example of the sort of people that we are able to recruit through apprenticeship schemes. There’s almost certainly a great deal of talent out there that hasn’t been tapped yet and we’d be more than happy to invest in other dedicated and hungry individuals like Kade.’
