Local funny man Lee Brace is in the running to win £10,000 as he becomes a regional finalist in Specsavers search for Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2017.

The 35-year-old stand-up comic and actor from Shenfield has won a £150 voucher for brand new glasses, a bottle of champagne and his chance at a place in the finals; which could see him winning the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year title and the large cash prize.

Part of his identity

After wearing specs since he was five years old, Lee feels like they are a ‘part of his identity’. He said: ‘I’m kind of known for my glasses in the acting and comedy world. I’ve got my chunky black rims in my headshots, and it seems to get me work.

‘I entered the competition after being egged on by a load of my mates, who all said, “go on you should do that” so I thought I might as well give it a chance.’

Kidscape

Lee is one of thousands of proud glasses-wearers from every corner of the UK and Ireland who have been entering this year’s event, by sending in specs selfies to their local Specsavers store. The competition, which has been running for the last 22 years, aims to celebrate wearing glasses with pride and every entry raises £1 for UK anti-bullying children’s charity Kidscape.

To date, nearly £400,000 has been raised for the charity.

Store director of Specsavers Brentwood, Manoj Patel, said: ‘Lee is a great candidate to become Spectacle Wearer of the Year. He’s great fun and loves wearing his glasses. We’re proud that he’s representing our store in the competition and our town.’
